A LITTLE BACKSTORY:
My collaborator (Miles in the credits below) has a
"tune".
"Its done, I just need a quick demo". He
thinks he has it sold.
Yeah, well I've walked this trail of tears before.
He has a chorus, and a chord progression that's some kind of
"circle of fifths".
Only every trip thru the verse, the key changes; great.
And the verse, well it fits the chorus, but who wants to
hear he can't afford brakes
on the jeep, the rent, blah, blah blah. And a melody of
course, he can't carry a tune in a bucket.
So, I tell him, chorus is great, if we start the first
stanza of the verse on the IV,
it will resolve to the I and we're golden. BUT, the verse
storyline, not so good.
As in, I'll take a pass. However, if the singer is having
"issues" with a gold digger
wife/girlfriend for instance; I think we might have a tune.
The re-write comes back.
Jeff has hit the mark pretty well, I trim a little fat, add
a couple of lines:
"She loves 'ol Benjamin better than me". One
last issue, it opens with;
"She said she wants to leave me, but what the heck.
She'll be back when I cash my check."
NO! I'm not stepping up to mic and sing; "What
the heck" no, never going to happen!
So back to the drawing board;
"She says she's going to leave me, ???, she'll be back when
I get paid".
His answer; "I'm being played".
BINGO!
For those who think this might be misogynist, or somehow
disrespectful?
Come on, if you haven't been is this relationship, surely
you know someone who has.....
SHE SAID SHES GONNA LEAVE ME,
I'M BEING PLAYED
SHE'LL BE BACK WHEN I GET PAID
WORK A LITTLE OVERTIME, TIME AN A HALF
I DON'T GET NOTHIN', JUST A PAIN IN THE ASS
IF I WAS SINGLE I'D BE ROLLIN' IN THE DOUGH
IT'S NEVER ENOUGH AND SHE LET'S ME KNOW
NEVER ENOUGH GAS IN THE TANK
NEVER ENOUGH MONEY IN THE BANK
NEVER ENOUGH JACK IN THE COKE
NEVER ENOUGH CIGARETTES TO SMOKE
PAID OFF THE WEDDIN' RING, IN TIME FOR HER TO HOCK IT
EVERYTIME I TURN MY BACK HER HAND'S IN MY POCKET
MY FRIENDS ALL SAY, ANY FOOL COULD SEE,
SHE LOVES OL' BENJAMIN BETTER THAN ME
WHATEVER I DO, I JUST CAN'T IT RIGHT
NEVER ENOUGH TIME FOR A LITTLE LOVIN' AT NIGHT
CHORUS
SHE'S BLOWIN' THROUGH MY CHECKBOOK, MY BACK'S AGAINST THE
WALL
GOT ME LIVIN' ON A DIET OF NICOTINE AND ALCOHOL
THE THINGS SHE DOES, DON'T MAKE NO SENSE
I STARTED DRINKIN' IN SELF DEFENCE
NEVER ENOUGH HOURS IN THE DAY
TO MAKE THE MONEY FOR THE BILLS I CAN'T PAY
CHORUS
NEVER ENOUGH NO MATTER HOW I TRY
NEVER ENOUGH WHEN ITS MY TURN TO BUY
NEVER ENOUGH ALL I GET FROM YOU
NEVER ENOUGH NO MATTER WHAT I DO
